High stakes and high notes as choirs face-off in Choirfactor

An estimated 150 singers are registered to perform this Friday April 12 on the Radisson Blu Hotel’s live lounge stage in the Choirfactor competition - a charity event organised by the Corrib Lions Club. Six entrants spanning the business, health, and sporting sector of Galway will engage in a ‘sing-off’ and all funds gathered on the night will be donated to the Kilcuan retreat and healing centre, Clarinbridge.

Councillors urged to show respect to the chair and get business done

While an amendment to a standing order to punish unruly councillors financially has been abandoned, as it was found to be legally unsound, many councillors agreed that a committment must be taken to ensure that business is done efficiently in a way that showed dignity and respect to the chair.

Staff from a private security firm were manning the doors as Monday night’s council meeting took place. An amendment to a standing order asked for this increased security and demand for identification to continue, however many councillors expressed concerns condemning it as undemocratic and draconian. Despite these concerns the amendment was later passed.

City Bin Co expansion continues with twelve new jobs in Galway IT hub

The City Bin Co, Galway’s primary waste disposal service, has announced that it is creating twelve new jobs in its IT department at its Oranmore headquarters.

In the past five months, 38 new recruits have been added to its Dublin and Galway offices. And this expansion is set to continue with a further 12 specialist roles currently being created in the IT department of the Galway branch.

More than one thousand DAS payments still outstanding in Galway

More than 1,000 farmers in Galway, who applied to the Disadvantaged Areas Scheme, have not received any payment, a situation a local TD has called “disgraceful”.

Fianna Fáil agriculture spokesperson and Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív said that figures he has received through a series of parliamentary questions show 1,097 Galway farmers have not received the money they are owed.

At the time I was diagnosed, I wasn't to know having undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and beating the cancer, that I would be left with very severe and long-term side effects from the treatment. The last eight years have been an ongoing battle with many hospitalizations and suffering. I didn't think the discovery of my illness would someday lead me from a small town in Ireland to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. But here I am.

Calling youth singers and choirs for Street Angels

Street Angels is a music competition for groups, choirs, and solo singers to perform music and song suitable for a church service and is open to secondary students in Galway.

The competition will be a public concert in the Augustinian Church. The winning groups will be selected by an independent jury of musicians. The concert is planned for April 19 at 8pm, but this has to be fully finalised.

Dignity of lives lost should not be forgotten in circus

Next Monday, a circus will descend on Galway. Media of all hue and definition will head west for a hearing that will be seen to set the agenda for a debate that has long divided this country. For more than a week, the focus of the country will be on the deliberations of a coroner and his witnesses in a case which has brought Galway to the attention of the world.

It is a case that is being used by all sides to advance a cause. And on all sides, it is a cause to which their proposers are strongly committed. It has often been difficult to comment on this case without being seen as a supporter of one side or the other, as being part of that agenda. It should be the case that the media should act as a conduit, but often this is not the case.
