Abuse is the new discourse

When Enda Kenny stood up in the Dail yesterday and outlined the amount of bile and hate that is coming his way courtesy of his stance on the abortion legislation, he was reflecting a reality that ensures abuse is now a new form of discourse, being seen instead as a quicker way of getting your point across than searching and struggling manfully for a burst of eloquence that may never arrive.

For having taken the stance he has on a controversial topic such as abortion, he ought not to be surprised that abuse will come his way. A day earlier, the Seanad which we we have been told for a week is a place for greater reflection than the Dail, was host to another burst of unparliamentary language and detail most unbecoming to its chambers when amember called the Taoiseach’ a clown’ who had ‘urinated’ on the institution (Now that would be a circus act to see). An hour after Mr Kenny’s protestations yesterday, Galway senator Ronan Mullen outlined and circulated an example of the sort of abuse that he gets for taking the stance that he does on a variety of issues.

No quality bus corridor should ever be allowed to go through Merlin Woods which is a jewel that needs to be protected, so say councillors who following a lengthy debate at Monday’s Galway City Council meeting finally agreed to allow the plans to temporarily suspended while the relevant SPCs and consultants can explore previous policies, analyses, and perhaps an alternative route.

During the debate on the constroversial Merlin Park Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) plans it was made abundantly clear by nearly all councillors present that they, along with local residents - many of whom make up the 1,200 or so signatures of an on-going petition - will not stand idly by while an amenity such as Merlin Woods is destroyed.

Funding of €162,000 has been ringfenced for “big events” in the city in future years after city councillors discussed and voted on recommendations proposed by the Corporate Policy Group, with Connaght Rugby receiving a large contribution of €30,000, Macnas €10,000, and Galway Arts Festival €8,000.

A meeting of the Corporate Policy Group was held last Monday morning with members considering a number of applications for funding from the Galway City Council’s marketing fund.
