A new digital access and tourism hub in Eyre Square is to be funded as part of a new €250,000 Digital Innovation Programme, which has been launched by the Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development, Seán Kyne.
The Digital Innovation Programme will provide funding to local authorities in the State to develop and implement local digital strategies, and to support projects which can be tested at a local level, with a view to expanding to other communities and counties.

Scientists from the Regenerative Medicine Institute in the School of Medicine at NUI Galway, in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast, have found a new function for normal cells, called stromal cells, within tumours that point the way in better understaning and preciction of response to immunotherapy. The study has been published in the internationally renowned journal, Cancer Immunology Research.
Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting both men and women in Ireland. Current treatments can combine radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy, but response rates in late stage disease can be disappointing. To date, therapeutic developments to tackle the problem of bowel cancer spreading to other parts of the body have had limited success and new methods are urgently needed to improve survival for patients.

The school first opened its doors to pupils in 1968 and for the last 50 years has given an excellent service in education to communities in Athenry and the surrounding parishes. In 2019, when the school community moves to a new 1,000 pupil building, it will undoubtedly continue to build on this proud tradition.

A Swiss woman in her fifties lost her life in an incident in Claddaghduff early yesterday morning as Storm Ali bore down on the country. The woman, who is understood to have been visiting the region, was staying in a caravan at Acton’s Beach in Claddaghduff when the structure was blown down a 20ft drop.
