Construction will begin shortly on a new three-storey radiation oncology centre at University Hospital Galway. The facility is expected to open in two years.
It will include seven radiotherapy treatment vaults, a brachytherapy suite, two CT rooms, on-treatment support and ancillary physics, treatment planning, and administration facilities.

National housing charity Threshold has warned people seeking rented properties to be careful of fraudsters following an increase in the occurrence of rent-related scams in the west of Ireland in recent weeks. The charity has seen a particular concentration of these incidents in Galway.
“Our Galway office has seen a marked increase in the number of rental scams being reported by our clients over the last few weeks,” said Karina Timothy, western regional services manager with Threshold. “Our advisors have been dealing with a number of cases in which those seeking rented accommodation have come into contact with people purporting to be landlords, but whose claims are ultimately exposed as illegitimate.”

Employees from a Galway company spent a day recently carrying out renovations at the headquarters of a local charity as part of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility programme.
Twenty-five staff from the Aviva Galway office gave up their time to help Galway Rape Crisis Centre put in new flooring, paint walls and ceilings, as well as replace door handles and shelves at its premises in Forster Court.

A total of 95 projects in Galway City and County have received more than €9.6million from the bequest to the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) from the will of the late Maureen O’Connell former owner of O’Connell’s pub in Eyre Square.
Since the donation in 2007, the original bequest totalling €7.73 million grew to €10.5m through accumulated bank interest and other income.The bequest has now been fully drawn down or allocated and a detailed report on its use and the projects which have benefitted was published this week Entitled “A Living Legacy’ the report describes how funds from Miss O’Connell’s estate were disbursed.

The objections of almost 300 groups and individuals to the proposed €600 million ring road around Galway city will be heard from Tuesday morning when an oral hearing into the project will open at the g Hotel.
The hearing which will run for up to three weeks will see the Galway County Council project team, which is developing the scheme on behalf of itself and Galway City Council, present the case for the 18km road.
