People urged to fight education cuts

Local Fine Gael senator and party spokesperson on education in the senate Fidelma Healy Eames is urging people to attend a meeting in the city tonight (Thursday) which will highlight what she terms the Government’s “cruel and callous” education cuts in Budget ‘09.
The public meeting, which will be held at the Salthill Hotel at 7.30pm, is being organised by the Oranmore senator and Fine Gael frontbench spokesperson for education, Brian Hayes, to protest against the Budget cuts which she says will impact “so gravely” on children’s futures.

NUI Galway is to offer a new electronic engineering degree, via the CAO, called the BE. in engineering innovation – electronic. The new four-year course, with the option of a fifth year to achieve a masters, will deliver graduates with the skills and capabilities to start up their own company to design niche electronic products for world-wide markets.
Established companies will also benefit from the availability of a new type of electronic engineer who has the capability to stimulate and support innovation and growth in those organisations.

Power Soccer has confirmed the visit of Everton academy coach Paul Harris to Power Soccer School of Excellence in Galway over the weekend of January 2-4, 2009. Harris has been instrumental in developing young players into first-teamers at Goodison Park.
As a player Paul Harris was with the Crewe Alexandra Academy on their scholarship system and joined the coaching staff at Everton seven years ago. He specialises in the development of players between the ages of seven and 12. He has been involved in coaching the 13-16-year-old age groups against some of the most respected academies world wide, such as Ajax, Barcelona, and Manchester United.
