Carol Services at St Nicholas

The Annual Civic Carol Service in St Nicholas’ is on Sunday Dec 19 at 4.00pm and will include a traditional service of nine lessons and carols with a special blessing of the whole city. The service will be attended by the Mayor and city councillors as well as Rt Rev Richard Henderson, Bishop of Tuam and Bishop Martin Drennan, and representatives of all the main churches in the city. The public are invited to go along and join in celebrating the Nativity in prayers, readings and carols.

At 4.00pm on Christmas Eve, St Nicholas’ will host the Carols Round the Christmas Tree, a very informal and enjoyable service, specially for families. Due to the huge popularity of this service, space is limited so arrive early as doors will be closed when capacity is reached. Doors open from 3.15pm.

High Court judge mystified by county council’s planning decision

A High Court judge has described as "very difficult to understand" Galway County Council's grant of planning permission for "a substantial housing estate outside Kinvara village on a blind corner, on a main road to Ballyvaughan and the Burren area".

It had been proposed to build 31 houses on a main road with a 100kph speed limit and the Council's permission also extended a town in an unplanned manner in an important tourist area, Mr Justice Peter Charleton said. The development would have resulted in the blind movement, in terms of sight lines for traffic, of many vehicle journeys to and from "this suburban type estate".

ACC Bank claims Galwaymen sought to defraud by transfering properties to wives

ACC Bank has claimed two Co Galway men who consented earlier this year to €3.2 million judgment orders in favour of the bank against them over unpaid property and development loans have sought to defraud the bank by transferring their interest in properties to their wives.

The bank claims the properties were transferred by Martin Fox and Gareth Duffy last June after it had initiated proceedings against them.
