A Co Galway man who has been a campaigner for people with disabilities for more than 10 years and who will run as an independent candidate in the general election will launch his Dail campaign tonight (Thursday) at Munroe’s in Dominick Street at 8pm.

Eamon Walsh, a city businessman and father of two from Headford who is a founding member of Hope4Disability, a local disability action group, believes a fresh approach is needed to manage the country.

Defendants who break suspended sentence rules send themselves to jail, warns judge

If defendants do not abide by the rules of a suspended sentence then they are sending themsleves to jail, warned a district court judge who sent a taxi fare dodger and repeat public order offender to jail for five months after he failed to take the chances given to him.

With a history of not paying for taxi fares and a number of public order offences it was not long before Brian Curran (42) of Knocknagreine, Furbo, Galway, found himself in hot water again. Curran appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated and threatening and abusive behaviour at Salthill Garda Station on December 8, 2010.

Galway Film Centre, in collaboration with RTÉ, has announced that Friday March 11 will be the deadline for this year’s Short Film Awards. Two scripts will be selected from the submissions received and the two winning entries will each receive a sum of €9,500 to make their film. In addition Galway Film Centre will provide equipment and facilities and RTÉ will screen the finished film.
