HSE warns against risk of Lyme disease

The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre yesterday warned the public regarding the dangers of Lyme disease. Spread by tick bites, in a minority of cases it can cause severe debilitating heart and nervous system disease.

With more people engaging in outdoor pursuits during the summer months, those who work and walk in forested or grassy areas must be vigilant against tick bites, says Dr Paul McKeown, HPSC specialist in public health medicine.

Physicists, for example, speak of ‘waves’ and ‘particles’, ‘inflation’, ‘black holes’, even ‘cold dark matter’. In each case we are talking about something that can be mathematically described, but only communicated by way of metaphor, analogy, or what scientists call ‘models’.

Critical Mass Galway holds a community cycle almost every month for people of various ages and abilities to remind Galway that bikes and cars must share the road; that the Galway City Council “needs to work more diligently on practical and innovative solutions to long-standing road issues”; that city planning “needs to do a better job at integrating all modes of transport, not just the automobile”; and that bicycles are “a fun, efficient and practical way of getting around the city”.
