Seven months jail for dangerous stag party bottle thrower

A seven month jail sentence was imposed on a man who while celebrating a stag party put passers by in danger by thowing a bottle from a window in the busy city centre street below.

Gary Benn (21) with an address at 23 Sullane Crescent, Raheen, Limerick, was brought before Galway District Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place, threatening and abusive behaviour, and failing to obey Garda direction at Quay Street on June 24, 2012.

Rape accused sent for Central Court trial

A 22-year-old Galway man accused of assaulting and raping a woman has been sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court last week and is charged with assaulting a woman causing her harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and rape at a city housing estate, contrary to Section 48 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act 1981, on Febaury 5, 2012.

There will be a night of traditional music and entertainment in the Western Hotel this Saturday at 9.30pm, to raise much funds for Talamarang Orphanage in Nepal.

The Talamarang Orphanage was founded by Melanie Hennessy who has since set up the NUI Galway Draíocht Society to raise funds for the orphanage. In 2010 Melanie won the JCI most outstanding person in the world for Humanitarian Aid and Volunteer Leadership.

Woman to pay €200 for pizza not paid for during Race Week

The cost of a pizza turned out to be rather pricey after a young Limerick mother, with 56 previous convictions, was fined €200 for leaving a popular city centre restaurant without paying and for failing to appear in court.

When arrested it came to light that Belinda O’Sullivan (21) of Bay 3 Clonlong, Southill, has a history of failing to appear in court, having clocked up 25 bench warrants and nine previous convictions, and will now have to appear in court next week to face up to the latest bench warrants. O’Sullivan was brought in custody before Galway District Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty to obtaining goods to the value of €21.80 at Fat Freddys, Quay Street, Galway, and making off without paying on July 30, 2012. A charge for obstructing a peace officer on July 31, 2012, was struck out by the State.
