Crowe unhappy about Westside Library closure

The library in Westside will not be closed to the public again, according to Galway City Council CEO Brendan McGrath.

It follows controversy over the facility being shut last Saturday week. It emerged at this week’s local authority meeting that the library is operating at a minimum staff capacity, as four staff have left. A number of the remaining workforce were sick on that particular day.

Creativity of day care centre users to be revealed in exhibition

An exhibition which will showcase the creative and imaginative artwork of people attending a day centre for people with mental health difficulties in Merlin Park will be launched today (Thursday) at the Secret Garden, 4 William Street at 11.30am.

The exhibition of the work of service users of the Ceim Eile Day Centre exhibition will be facilitated by artist Joanna Kasinska. Entitled ‘Bloom’ it will run until St Valentine’s Day.

Morse Code, Clifden and the dawn of global communications

Frank McCurry and Tom Frawley of GMIT, whose radio heritage work has featured on the BBC Coast series, will give a talk at 7pm on Wednesday February 11 in NUI Galway on radio and the Clifden Marconi Station as well as a demonstration of Morse Code, the first system used to send long-distant messages using electricity.

The lecture, which takes places in the university’s Insight Centre for Data Analytics located in the Dangan Business Park, will be followed by a guided tour of the Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland which includes a new exhibit on the development of radio and the importance of the Marconi Station at Clifden in the birth of worldwide communications.

Building on the success of the inaugural Creative Arts Performance Points scheme in 2014, NUI Galway is to again reward a limited number of students with exceptional achievements in selected disciplines in the creative arts with CAO ‘Performance Points’ for entry into undergraduate courses in the University. This is the only Creative Arts Scholarship Scheme of its kind offered by a university in Ireland.
