The GSPCA has this week asked the public to keep an eye out for abandoned pups following the discovery of a three-week old pup in a wheelie bin in Gort.
The dog, believed to be a Pomeranian/shiatsu cross, had been subjected to a botched tail docking procedure. The tiny pup also had a skin infection and was riddled with worms.

The average asking price for a house in Galway city grew by 15 per cent in the first three months of this year, according to the latest house price report from Daft.ie.
The average house price in the city now stands at €189,000, 21 per cent above its lowest point. Prices grew by three per cent in the same period last year.

There were 34 people awaiting beds on Monday, 13 were on trolleys and 17 were inappropriately accommodated in wards on Tuesday while the figures for Wednesday were the same.

Senator Lorraine Higgins has called on social media companies to “stop powder puff PR and show some corporate social responsibility to their users”.
Sen Higgins was reacting to the growth of online abuse and threats, raised at the AGSI conference this week, which Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan has committed to investigating.

Migrant women from the Imo Region of Nigeria, living in Galway (who have formed the Imo Women’s Association, Galway) are teaming up with local heart and stroke charity Croi and Galway County Council for a free health promotion event on Friday April 10 from 10am to 2pm in the Croi Heart and Stroke Centre, Newcastle Galway
This event is being run as part of Croí’s ‘Women at Heart’ campaign which aims to raise awareness of the fact that heart disease is the biggest killer of women in Ireland. However, women seem largely unaware of the significant differences between the sexes when it comes to symptoms, age of onset and need for medical care. This campaign aims to educate women on their risk of cardiovascular disease and empower them to take action. Announcing details of the event, Croi says this is a particularly important health promotion event as African women have a particularly higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
