The Manchester bombing has been condemned as “a vile atrocity” by the Galway Alliance Against War, but it added that the terrorist incident will generate more coverage than similar attacks in the Middle East, by virtue of it happening in the West.

In a statement, the Galway peace group said: “Such atrocities are a daily occurrence in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa: from Afghanistan to Yemen, from Libya to South Sudan to Somalia. These atrocities are courtesy of imperialism and its proxies in the region. These facts receive minimum, if any, coverage.”

Top US choir to perform in Galway Cathedral

Free events celebrating Lady Gregory’s life and Biodiversity Week at Coole

Coole Park has a rich cultural heritage as the former home of Lady Augusta Gregory and the centre of the Irish Literary Revival. Its present status as a nature reserve is due to the global importance of its extensive wetland system and woodland which borders it. To celebrate both these aspects of Coole there will be two free events during the last weekend in May.

Lady Gregory passed away 85 years ago in the early hours of the morning of May 23, 1932 at her home in Coole. To mark this occasion there will be a guided walk on Saturday May 27 illustrating her extraordinary life and her many achievements as co-founder of the Abbey Theatre, folklorist, translator, playwright, mother, grandmother, and patron of the arts.

Galway Traveller Movement walks out of accommodation committee over inaction

This week, the Galway Traveller Movement (GTM) withdrew from the Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee (LTACC), which oversees the implementation of the Traveller Accommodation Plan 2014-2018 for Galway city. The committee members include Galway city council officials, local elected representatives, and Traveller representatives.

GTM presented a briefing paper with recommendations to all LTACC members in June 2016, which provided solutions to the Traveller accommodation issues in Galway city. However, to date, they feel that no substantive action has been taken to address these issues and Travellers continue to live in overcrowded, unsafe, and substandard living conditions.
