Samaritans in Galway launch volunteer recruitment campaign

Samaritans in Galway are launching a major volunteer recruitment campaign to encourage people to get involved with the charity to give something back to the local community and help change people’s lives.

Established in Ireland in 1962, there are now 20 Samaritans branches across the country with over 1,800 active volunteers on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Samaritans are best known for the vital support given to callers on its 24-hour telephone service, but volunteers are also on hand to offer support by SMS, email, face-to-face in communities, through written correspondence and in prisons.

A feast of theatre and dance shows from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK and Ireland, made especially for babies and children, will take place in Galway from February 1-4. Wide Eyes, a one-off festival for the under six age group, features 15 new shows from Irish and international artists across 15 countries.

People Before Profit Galway will hold a fundraising table quiz this coming Monday at 7.30pm downstairs in The Cellar Bar, Eglinton Street.

All questions will relate to Galway city and county. All funds raised will go towards supporting the PBPG organisation and its campaigns. “People Before Profit are a grassroots party without the support of wealthy donors or corporations,” said a spokesperson for the group, “so all support is much needed and gratefully received.”

Local residents have been campaigning for a community centre in the area since 1987. The centre was officially opened in May 2016; however it has effectively remained closed until now due to concerns over how the facility would be staffed and administered.
