The announcement yesterday of new rules for the taxi industry in Ireland will lead to more professionalism, will drive out rogue operators and will clean up the industry, according to MEP Jim Higgins.

New branding, developed by the National Transport Authority, will see semi-permanent ‘taxi' signage affixed to the driver and passenger doors of each car. The move is intended to encourage greater professionalism and accountability within the taxi sector.

The GMIT careers fair will take place on Tuesday October 9 on the campus at Dublin Road, Galway. It is estimated that more than 50 companies and professional organisations will pitch up individual standS at the event to help students graph the latest career trends and job opportunities. There will also be information provided about postgraduate prospects in terms of study, placement options, internship routes, and volunteering opportunities.

Somewhere in the region of 1,000 students are expected to visit the various stands and workshops on the day and will be availble for viewing from 12 noon until 3pm. Presentations will also take place covering topics such as ‘teacher training in the UK’, ‘professional accountancy careers’, ‘job opportunities with INTEL’, and many more. Professional recruiters will be on hand throughout the day to dispense advice to students. CV clinics will be open on the day where students can get vital tips on how to compose a CV.

Aviva links up with school to prepare students for work

The alliance between Aviva Galway and Galway Community College in Mooneenageisha which allows for senior cycle students from the community school to enhance their job seeking skills is set to continue. Through a Skills@Work programme, employees from Aviva will volunteer to assist students in perfecting the exercises that will improve their ability to gain employment.

The scheme is due to commence in the next few weeks when students will be immersed in a course of practical training as well as information talks about working life. The Aviva employees will instruct students on the method of CV writing and practising interview techniques.
