Suspended sentences do mean something, warned Judge Mary Fahy who jailed a man for a total of 11 months this week after he threatened his estranged wife at her home and then grabbed an arresting Garda by the throat in an attempt to evade arrest.

The spring programme of cultural and heritage events will get under way at Coole Park later this month, with the official launch of the programme taking place on Tuesday.
Once again the Friends of Coole in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Services, Galway County Council, Galway Rural Development, Galway Education Centre, Fáilte Ireland West, and the community of Gort will host the official launch of the Cultural and Heritage Winter Programme at Coole Park. The 2009 Spring Programme brochure will be available on the day and it will also be widely available locally.

Dep Noel Treacy has called on the Government and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith, to put in place a special financial aid package for sheep farmers.
“Minister Smith secured the right to use unused CAP monies at the end of each calendar year at a meeting of the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers last November,” Dep Treacy said. “This opens up to the Irish Government to spend a further €23 million a year between the years 2010 - 2013.
