Burrow’s acceptance of tobacco top job is ‘mercenary’, says Healy Eames

A Galway senator has sharply criticised the decision by the former Bank of Ireland chairman, Richard Burrows, to accept the chairmanship of British American Tobacco (BAT) calling it a move that is mercenary and ill thought out.

Fine Gael senator Fidelma Healy Eames said recently that the decision by Mr Burrows to accept such a position within a company which boasts a portfolio of 300 cigarette brands is cynical beyond belief.

Family service at Ardrahan

Whenever there is a fifth Sunday in the month, a family service is held in one of the churches within the Aughrim group of parishes. As there are five Sundays in August the Church of Ireland at Ardrahan will take its turn by hosting the family service on Sunday August 30 at 11am. These are family oriented with young people encouraged to perform songs and readings, with the rest of the congregation joining in. Following the service all are invited to bring their own picnic to Coole Park. All are invited to attend.
