The vandalism and theft of boilers causing more than €100,000 worth of damage at a Galway City Council-owned housing estate has been described as “appalling” by local TD Michael D Higgins.
The Labour president said that the break-in to houses in the Sliabh Bhán estate in Ballybane is “an appalling development” but one that underlines the urgency of transferring empty finished houses to social housing.

The Galway Mayo Institute of Technology has lodged a planning permission application with Galway City Council for the construction for a new engineering school.
The planning application, which was lodged on August 4 last, outlines plans for a development at a site located at the GMIT Sports Field on the Dublin Road which is south of the principal campus. It seeks permission for the construction of a new third level educational building (gross floor area of c7,150m2) which will house the engineering school and will comprise a maximum of three to five storeys, with a maximum building height of c26.5 metres and an overall height of +c48.5 metres OD.

Gardai are warning the public to beware of bogus callers and to request ID following an incident at the weekend where a house was robbed by a woman claiming to be from the HSE.
An investigation was launched into a house robbery in Renmore Road which took place on Saturday evening. The culprit allegedly approached the house claiming to be a member of staff from the HSE. It is believed the woman, accompanied by a man, then entered the house and a sum of cash was taken.

The College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway has announced details of a special entrance maths examination which will give students a second chance to pursue a career in engineering. The exam, which takes place on Wednesday August 25, is for students who achieve the CAO points for an undergraduate engineering degree course at NUI Galway but who have not met the obligatory maths requirement.

As jobs in the health sector continue to be under threat it was revealed this week that the HSE paid a staggering €90,000 to a consultancy firm for a cost-containment report.
The contract was awarded to UK consultants Mott MacDonald following a tender process in April of this year. The Mott MacDonald team made up of medical, nursing, and accountancy professionals, then carried out on-site visits to hospitals and community services across the HSE west region.
