Overview
A recent analysis found that the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rate among troops serving in Iraq may be as high as 35 per cent. Even more conservative estimates, which cite a 20 per cent PTSD rate, are sobering. Common symptoms include trouble sleeping or concentrating, feeling detached from people, apathy, irritability, hyper-vigilance, flashbacks, nightmares, or inability to concentrate, but they vary depending on the person and the trauma. It can take weeks, months, or even years for PTSD to appear following a traumatic event or period.

Thousands expected to throng Claregalway for garden festival

Thousands of people are expected to flock to Claregalway this Saturday and Sunday for the second annual Galway Garden festival, to be held in historic Claregalway Castle.

The thousands who thronged to the castle for the event last year knew it was something special — for the first time in centuries, people moved in droves on its grounds and now it is to happen all over again with this year's festival to run over two days on this Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10 from 11am to 6pm each day.

Autocross event for Gort this Sunday

Galway Motor Club has announced that it is organising round seven of the D&B Doors National Autocross Championship on Sunday July 10. Autocross, car racing on a grass surface, is one of the oldest forms of motorsport in Ireland. The Galway club has revived its annual event and it will take place near Gort. Practice runs on the grass track course will commence at 11.30am with timed runs commencing after midday.

Population growth a boost for Western Rail Corridor

West on Track campaigners have welcomed the census figures, describing the growth in population along the route of the Western Rail Corridor a real “boost”.

A spokesman said in a statement issued earlier this week: “The latest Central Statistics Office figures released this week show a very positive rise in population along Phase 2 of the Western Rail Corridor, with a 19.6 per cent rise in Athenry, a 9.8 per cent rise in Tuam and a whopping 25.5 per cent increase in the population of Claremorris town. All of the rail connected towns in County Mayo increased their populations, with Castlebar up 1.7 per cent, Westport up 7.4 per cent, Ballina up 10.3 per cent and Ballyhaunis up 15.8 per cent.
