Enhancing role of MABS in new personal insolvency legislation would help indebted citizens - says Kyne

Fine Gael Galway West TD Seán Kyne yesterday called for the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) to be given a more central role in the Personal Insolvency Legislation.

Deputy Kyne’s comments follow on from Parliamentary Questions he submitted to both Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, and Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, on the role and resourcing of MABS and the emergence of new, private ‘debt management’ companies.

Claregalway man accused of assaulting his uncle in the face with a knuckle duster contests charge

A young Claregalway man accused of assaulting his sickly uncle by punching him in the face while brandishing a knuckle duster successfully contested the charges brought against him as there were doubts over who had started the incident.

Judge Mary Fahy dismissed the assault causing harm charge brought against Jonathan Ward (20) with an address at 101 River Oaks, Claregalway, following a hearing at Monday’s Galway District Court as there were doubts over whether the incident at Cuileen, Headford Road, had been started by the accused or by the injured party.

Teenager sent for trial over assault of city publican

A Ballybane teenager accused of assaulting a city centre publican while armed with a knife has been sent forward for trial.

Nineteen-year-old John Mongan, with an address at 5 Castlepark, Ballybane, is charged with assaulting Kieran Hanley causing him harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and while committing this offence and in the course of the dispute producing a black and yellow handled knife in a manner likely to intimidate another person and capable of inflicting serious harm, contrary to Section 9(1) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990, at Murty Rabbitt’s Bar on March 18, 2011.

Cllr Catherine Connolly says the “ongoing crisis” regarding patients on trolleys at the regional hospital - there were more than 50 people awaiting beds on two separate nights last week - confirms the “absolute necessity” of keeping the 35-year-old Upper Newcastle public nursing home open.

Parents urged to stop parking illegally at Scoil Caithriona

Motorists who park on double yellow lines on the main road at Scoil Caithriona in Renmore, will face parking tickets and fines, unless they start using the nearby carpark.

The situation has resulted in the school becoming increasingly concerned for pupil safety. As a result the school has handed out letters to every pupil, to be given to their parents or guardians, advising that people who continue to park on the double yellow lines will be issued with parking tickets/fines.
