Five months suspended for assault of woman

A man who assaulted an elderly woman after failing to take medication for his psychological problems and consuming alcohol has been given a five month suspended sentence.

Peter Klap (46) with an address at 15 Gaelcarraig Park, Newcastle, pleaded guilty at Galway District Court on Monday to assaulting a woman and threatening and abusive behaviour at Cookes Corner, Newcastle Road.

It was reading Owen Barfield’s History in English Words many years ago that first made me realise words are like the artefacts – the shards of shattered pottery, the unearthed house foundations, or the elaborate tombs filled with grave goods - the archaeologist uses to reconstruct the past. Or, as Barfield put it:

New online Galway comedy seeks support for RTE Storyland competition

A new online comedy show, Student Teacher, which is made and set in Galway has made it through to the third round of the RTE competition, Storyland, and is seeking the public’s continued support to get through to the next stage.

The show is based on a young man who leaves school early to become a teacher and ends up in charge of his old classmates. The creators of the show are keen to stretch their talents and showcase Galway; while the second episode focused on sports and GAA, the next installment will be focusing on local heritage centres with history and youthful tomfoolery getting extra attention.

Celebrity chef launches free cookery class in Galway for people living with arthritis

Celebrity chef Stuart O’Keeffe this week launched ‘Let’s Cook!’, a series of free cookery classes for people with arthritis. This innovative initiative, developed by Arthritis Ireland with the support of healthcare company Abbott, will serve up a series of tailor-made recipes through demonstrations run across the country, with a Galway ‘Let’s Cook!’ class taking place in The Carlton Hotel, Dublin Road at 7.30pm on Monday, May 21.
