There will be a variety of free events in Coole throughout July. 

Following the very well attended Yeats’ birthday celebrations, there will be a couple of guided walks on the theme of Yeats at Coole, on Sundays July 5 and 19. Go along for a stroll through the magical landscape that inspired Yeats to write some of his best loved poetry. The walk will be punctuated by short excerpts of his poems relating to Coole, where he spent 20 summers.

KINVARA WILL host the town’s inaugural Midsummer Bash, a day of music and entertainment at Kinvara Community Centre on Saturday July 11 with Tony Trundle & Band and What The Funk.

Tony Trundle is a singer/fiddler, renowned for his smooth fiddle style which mixes Irish trad, country, and rock’n’roll. He grew up in Newry and lived in Manchester until 2007, and now lives in Kinvara. He describes his songs as “snapshots of characters and situations, kind of short stories”. He will be joined by Frank Kilkelly (guitar), Paul Johnson (double bass), and Bruno Staehelin (drums).

Corrib Community Music Scheme to make short film on its work

CORRIB COMMUNITY Music Scheme, Headford, has been selected by the Galway Film Centre, in partnership with Galway County Council and Galway City Council, as one of two community groups to make a short film about their activities.

This film project, which starts at the end of this month at the Headford Music Summer Camp, was entitled Music Works -Together in Time and will involve musicians, teachers, local actors, historians, and mentors from the Galway Film Centre.

In theory, home is where we all should feel the safest. It should be a refuge for all of us lucky to have a place to call home. It is the place where you can truly be yourself, far away from the pretence of modern life where, as characters in the great play of life, you learn your lines and your role before you walk out each day to act out your part.

I am often reminded of the image of Padraig Nally, in the months and years before the incident that changed his life, sitting there in the dark of night, listening to the wind coming through the trees that line the road to his house, cocking an ear for any deviation from the norm, his heartbeat quickening at any detection of disturbance in the lonely darkness. His ease returning only when eventually, the dawn arrived to throw a sheath of brightness over the land.

Councillors warn about the negative effects of any reduction in islands air service

Galway county councillors have issued a strong message to the Government that the present level of air service to the Aran Islands must be maintained. Aer Arann has administered the service to the islands since 1970 and currently operates daily flights to Inis Mór, Inis Oirr, and Inis Meáin. All flights which take about 10 minutes from lift-off to touch down, depart and arrive from Connemara Regional Airport. The contract for the service is now up for renewal and there are fears due to a cut from Government to the air service subvention, the service will be reduced.
