40,000 graveyard records released in county digital mapping of graveyards project

Over 40,000 graveyard memorial records are now being released as part of Galway County Digital Mapping of Graveyards Project. The aim of the project is to support communities and diaspora to connect with their past by unlocking valuable graveyard data sources and making them available as open-source data that will be free for all to use.

Calls made for update on planning status of Salthill Tourist Office

Calls have been made to Galway City Council tourism and economic development departments for an urgent update on the status of planning for a proposed business that was successful in its bid to use the derelict Tourist Office in Salthill.

Cllr Niall Mc Nelis said concerns had been raised that it may not match the planning of the business, but this process has dragged on and another tourist season has been lost for the facility.

Councillor calls for five year plan to tackle ageing roads and footpaths

City Councillor Declan McDonnell has urged Galway City Council to draw up a further five-year plan to tackle dangerous ageing roads and footpaths in the older residential areas of Galway.

The Independent Councillor paid tribute to the Council for the work carried out in the Old Mervue area over recent years, which he said had transformed several neighbourhoods and made them safer for pedestrians.

This event lit the spark for a militant global movement that has forced real, significant change. The vast majority in Irish society recognise that there is no LGBT without the ‘T’ and that trans rights are all of our rights. Announced by Minister Roderic O'Gorman on Tuesday, August 8, the measures, which will provide victims of domestic violence with five days of fully paid leave, have been welcomed as a good start by local social services charity, COPE Galway, but they say there is room for improvement.

The new form of leave will be introduced as part of the 'Work Life Balance Act' and will be formally introduced this autumn with the publication of regulations that are currently being developed by Women's Aid, which will define and detail the rate of pay and provide guidance for employers. Ireland will be one of the first countries in Europe to introduce such a scheme, though similar measures are available in Australia.

Race week off to a flying start

The eyes of the racing world are on Galway this week, as attendance figures are eagerly awaited by many involved in the industry. Almost 117,000 people attended over the seven days in 2022, and any decrease on this figure for the 2023 festival would be in contrast to overall attendance figures at race meetings for the first six months of this year. Statistics released recently by Horse Racing Ireland show a 7.6% increase in attendances for the first half of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022.
