Marine Institute to cover distance from Renville to the North Pole in festive challenge to save lives at sea

Staff at the Marine Institute are embarking on a festive fundraising challenge in aid of the RNLI - they plan to to walk, run, row, cycle, and swim a total of 4,068km, equivalent to the distance from their headquarters in Renville, Galway to the North Pole. The fundraiser is a team challenge recognising the work of the RNLI Lifeboats Ireland, and they are inviting everyone to join in and support this worthy cause.

GMIT Virtual Choir dedicates rendition of ‘O Holy Night’ to Trish Carrick

A new video production by the GMIT Virtual Choir, featuring the classic Christmas carol ‘O Holy Night’ sung by staff and students at the institute, has been dedicated to their late colleague Trish Carrick.

The video, which brings together more than 70 staff and student voices, can be viewed at youtu.be/QJIaztRBLu8 and www.facebook.com/GMITOfficial. The production features the choristers dressed in black and silver, interspersed with clips of members with their families and friends preparing for the festivities.

I hope that no other girl who goes on to play football or camogie or soccer or whatever sport for her club, her parish, her county, her country is ever made feel the way that the Galway ladies team felt when they made their way down from Dublin last Sunday evening. On Sunday morning last when I heard that this talented Galway team, the second best in Ireland last year, top top athletes, were being asked to make a mad dash from one place to another to play a game of such importance at a time earlier than they expected, I felt it was utter madness and would end in frustration.
