Christmas can be an expensive time of year for everyone, especially for those of us who are studying and aren’t earning a regular income. When I was younger, I was able to get away with presenting my family their gifts without actually having to put my hand in my pocket. I relied on my sibling to buy the presents and include me as part of he ‘present ceremony’. Now that I’m older, I realise that I too have to give back in order to have a sense of giving and being independent. I’ve saved up my pocket money all year and set a challenge for myself this Christmas to shop on a budget.

Katelyn Molloy, a Leaving Cert student from Cregmore, Claregalway has qualified for the semi-final stages of the All-Ireland Music Competition where a recording contract and representation at TMI awaits the winning act. Seventeen year-old Katelyn, a cousin of pop star Una Healy of The Saturdays will be contesting for a place in the final at the West County Hotel, Ennis, Co Clare on January 4 where she will have to battle against 15 other competitors in the penultimate stages of the competition.

A Galway senator is calling for Arts Minister, Jimmy Deenihan, to officially set a date for the Famine Commemoration Day to not only acknowledge this significant event in Irish history but also to fully capitalise on the forthcoming Gathering events planned for 2013.

Speaking in the Seanad this week, Labour’s Lorraine Higgins urged Minister Deenihan to set the date, and a venue, for this commemoration which is of importance not just to people in Ireland, but further afield, and that 2013 is the time to hold such an event as it is hoped that thousands will visit for The Gathering.

A deep sea organic salmon farm for Galway Bay, which is said to have the potential to create 500 jobs and inject €14.5 million into the local economy, is attracting major attention from possible investors with up to 21 financiers, spanning three continents, having confirmed their interest in the €60 million investment.

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Irish seafood development agency, has applied for a license for the development which is to be located at Inis Óirr, Galway Bay, and which is intended to have the capacity to farm up to 15,000 tonnes of organic salmon, an output which is then to be built up over a period of six years.
