‘Petrol bombing’ incident in Knocknacarra estate leaves residents shaken and angry

Residents of the Slí na Sruthán estate in Knocknacarra are left shaken and concerned following an alleged arson attack on a car parked outside a house in the early hours of Tuesday, June 20.

The fire was first noticed by neighbours who alerted emergency services, but residents, using household extinguishers put out the fire before it spread to the surrounding houses and gardens.

Only one case of severe Lyme disease in west last year

Only one case of a severe form of Lyme disease, a bacterial infection which can be spread to humans by infected ticks, was reported in Galway last year, according to figures released by the HSE. This was the first case to have been reported in the county for four years.

Protests planned as Security Policy forum takes place at University

Activists from a variety of groups are set to protest in the city tonight and tomorrow as University of Galway plans to host the Government’s Consultative Forum on International Security Policy.

News of the protests is expected to result in high security on the campus for the event which will be addressed by Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Micheál Martin among others.

Specialist menopause clinic at UHG

Sixty patients have attended a regional menopause clinic since it was set up in November of last year. The facility, which is based at University Hospital Galway, is a specialist service for women with additional needs around menopause care. Women are referred to the clinic which is open one afternoon per week.

Ann Cosgrove, the chief operations officer of the Saolta University Healthcare Group, which runs the local public hospitals, said 41 new patients have been seen to date at the Complex Menopause Clinic. An additional 19 women who availed of the service were review patients.
