Now in its third year, the Galway Bike Festival promotes cycling for everyone, aims to increase the number of cyclists in Galway and supports a dynamic cycling culture in the city and county.

Claddagh pupils look for more schools to play Olympic handball

Fifth class pupils at Claddagh NS are issuing an appeal to find competitors for their Olympic handball team. According to the children, very few schools are involved in this sport which is described as a cross between basketball and soccer, and they are urging new schools to become involved and, if necessary, they are welcome to practice with Claddagh NS in their court.

A lot of people have been left disappointed by what was announced by the Government this week regarding getting the country back to work. There is no doubt that what was finally released and announced was very different from that which was promised during the heat of the General Election, but then Government actions are always tempered by the reality of power.

There is much concern over the fact that the pension funds are being raided to fund this initiative which is doubtful will itself create one decent job., However, this should not make us lose sight of the fact that this is merely the grassy middle on the long boreen to recovery. The Government was never going to come out with radical proposals that had people flocking from the dole office to shiny new jobs, and a good job of lowering expectations was undertaken by both parties in the build up to last Tuesday’s announcement.

A number of consultants at University Hospital Galway have sought an urgent meeting with Government politicians in the wake of the resignation of colorectal surgeon Mr Myles Joyce last week over the hospital’s failure to provide him with adequate theatre time.

His decision - which was reportedly taken out of frustration at not being able to get the facilities he needed to carry out his work - came just 15 months after he was appointed to the west’s biggest hospital.
