Councillor Mike Crowe has this week reiterated his call for a large part of the city centre to be pedestrianised for the rest of the summer, saying that it is “time for a real change in Galway City and one that will bring a benefit to everyone.”
He told the Advertiser last evening that he attended a meeting with the Chief Executive of the City Council and head of Transportation Unit on this very matter and pressed his belief that Middle Street, Cross Street, Market Street, Upper Abbeygate Street and Eglinton Street should all be restricted to pedestrians and cyclists on a trial basis with a review in September.

The heroic efforts of staff at GMIT have continued their work to help frontline heroes with the delivery of another batch of face visors to Galway University Hospitals this week.
While the campus doors may be closed, the work goes on. Over the last eleven short weeks, GMIT staff have been challenged in exceptional ways. Whilst having to adapt to new ways of teaching and assessing online, they have also been engaged in the background supporting the fight against COVID-19. Several initiatives undertaken have included the opening of a contact tracing centre, pioneering the development of open source ventilators, in addition to the production of face coverings.

Galway Urban Greenway Alliance have proposed that a 2.6km temporary cycle path should be installed along the seafront from Southpark to Blackrock.
According to their spokesperson, Sean Leonard, the barriers currently in place along the prom are unsightly and dangerous. He said; “These barriers have forced cyclists out into the road where cycling is much more dangerous. This is causing increasing numbers to cycle on the prom itself, which in turn is causing a danger to pedestrians.

The project is led by NUI Galway’s Professor Derek O’Keeffe and Dr Ted Vaughan, with Dr Kevin Johnson from the University of Limerick.

If you are tempted by the warmth of the heat that is suddenly gifted to you, and you follow it back down the chamber from whence it came, you will eventually come to the exterior; and the brightness that will dazzle your eyes will eventually relent and allow you see to see something you have not for a while. You will look around at this strangeness, not knowing what it is you are looking at. With your eyes absorbing rapid light, not knowing who can see you in all your mitheredness and slovenly ways which are part and parcel of the way you have been living for the past while.

A protest march scheduled for the city centre this weekend in solidarity with victims of racism has been called off due to concerns about the health risks posed by such a large gathering.
In a statement last evening, the Galway Anti Racism Network said that they had decided to postpone the #BlackLivesMatter protest and have asked people to register their concern in an online protest.
