Today an exhibition by talented photographer Edward Lee will begin in Galway city library running until Monday August 30.

As well as being a successful photographer Lee is also a writer and painter originally from Dublin, but now living in Galway. This is his first photography exhibition. He has exhibited his paintings in many venues in Dublin and Galway, with many of his works in private collections. His photographs have appeared in magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. He is currently working on two photography collections "Lying Down With The Dead" and "Naked". His poetry and short stories have appeared in magazines in Ireland, England, America and Canada. His debut poetry collection, Playing Poohsticks On Ha'Penny Bridge, was published last year by Spider Press.

They’ve all known for a long time that the bould pig Ivor had been lashing up the swill with all four trotters, but sure, they let him carry on because they just didn’t want the farmer to come over and see what was going on at the trough. ‘Cos then he might look at them all, and see the muck on the trotters from the fumbling in the greasy swill.

Bottom of the table — Galway hospital flunks national performance survey

University College Hospital in Galway has been named and shamed as the worst performing hospital in the country, failing terribly in areas such as access to services for patients as well as the use of beds and other resources.

The hospital ended up bottom of the heap in a performance survey released this week by the Health Service Executive (HSE). The survey, which is a series of assessments carried out under the HealthStat programme in May of this year, found that University College Hospital Galway’s performance, under the criteria set out by the HSE, was “unsatisfactory, requiring urgent attention”.

Councillor says increased anti-litter attitude is needed in Galway

Fianna Fail’s City Councillor Ollie Crowe has called on traders, city officials and pedestrians to adopt a more anti-littering attitude stressing that by doing so we are ensuring the future prosperity of the city.

”In 2007, Galway embarked on an energetic anti-litter campaign and managed to obtain eighth place in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) Anti litter League,” Cllr Crowe continued, “However, Galway’s ‘litter Free’ status was short lived and we have now dropped to 45th place. If we continue to drop litter, we’ll continue to drop on this league, and inevitably our visitor numbers and revenue will drop.”

Galway City Council decided this past week to remove a statue memorializing the women who lived, worked and, in some cases, died at the Sisters of Mercy Magdalene laundry in the city. Dedicated in March 2009, the Mick Wilkins statue was commissioned by the same city councilors who now seek to remove it. It is located at the corner of Forster Street and Bothár Breandan O Eithir, standing in full public view close to where the laundry institution once stood.

To celebrate the wonderful beaches available to us in County Galway, a series of walks is taking place throughout the month of August, organised with the aim of exploring and discovering these magnificent beaches.

The walks which are led by experienced and local marine biologists as well ecologists, will look at various aspects of marine ecology, taking in all different areas of marine life, exploring everything from seaweeds and shellfish to rock pools teaming with life. All the walks are interactive and an excellent way to learn about the various habitats which can be found on our beaches from sand dunes to the shoreline.
