It is customary on St Patrick’s Day for the US president to speak glowingly of Ireland, invoking the name of the national saint and smiling when handed a bowl of shamrock. However, when President Obama this year made his remarks on St Patrick’s Day, he gave his audience a brief history lesson linking two remarkable men, one Irish and the other African American. The Irishman was Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847), the African American, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895).

O’Connell is one of the giants of Irish history and, together with Parnell, represents one of the two traditions in the movement for Irish independence, the other tradition, of course, being that of Tone, Emmet, the Young Irelanders, and the Easter Rising of 1916.

Public lecture on Obama and US foreign policy

In advance of US president Barack Obama’s visit to Ireland, an American academic will deliver a public lecture in Galway entitled Obama: Warlord of the US Empire.

Brian Kelly, originally from the United States, and now a lecturer at Queen’s University, Belfast, will deliver the lecture this Saturday upstairs in Richardson’s, Eyre Square, at 8pm.

Tickets go on sale for Druid’s trip to Inis Meáin

Druid Theatre Company will make its first visit to Inis Meáin in more than six years, when it stages, appropriately, Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan on the island.

The Cripple of Inishmaan will be performed on Sunday June 26 at 1.30pm and 8.30pm. Tickets are only available by phone through Druid on 091 - 500233. Tickets are €20/16 and a booking fee of €1 will apply to each ticket. There is no online booking available and a limit of two tickets per person will apply.
