European Research Council Funds ‘blue-sky’ NUI Galway biomedical research projects

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded two NUI Galway researchers €4.4 million to pursue ‘blue-sky’ biomedical research. With this support, Professor Laoise McNamara and Dr Dimitrios Zeugolis, will pursue frontier research to achieve far-reaching impact on improving human health.

Professor McNamara and Dr Zeugolis were winners in the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant competition which saw 301 top scholars and scientists from across Europe receive awards, following a review of 2,453 proposals.

The meeting hosted by Sinn Féin MEP for Midlands North West Matt Carthy, is entitled: ‘The Western Rail Corridor - Can EU Funding get Athenry on track?’ and will feature contributions from the European Parliament member, along with Louis O’Hara, Cllr Gerry Murray and members of community group FLAG (Forward Looking Athenry Group) who believe the Western Rail Corridor can bring much needed investment and tourism opportunities to the Athenry area.

Galwayman’s tune voted Best Christmas Song by Christmas FM

Galway man Niall Teague has won the Christmas FM Song Contest 2019, with his song titled ‘Santa Claus’ picked as the best song by Christmas FM listeners nationally and internationally.

The track includes members of Saint Nicholas’ Parochial School from Galway city where they sang along beautifully with Mr Teague. Paddy Jordan also recorded the song, while Miki Belton, Padraic Joyce and Bertrand Huvé played wonderfully throughout the track.

Hundreds of crèches facing closure if re-registration not sorted – Rabbitte

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs, Anne Rabbitte TD, has raised serious concerns over the number of crèches who have yet to apply for re-registration with Tusla.

It has emerged during Oral Questions with the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone that there are 230 crèches yet to submit their re-registration applications to Tusla ahead of today (Thursday)’s deadline. This equates to six per cent of crèches. Failure to re-register means that Tusla cannot guarantee a service will be allowed to operate from 1st January 2020.
