Boil notices stay in place for two county water schemes

Irish Water, working in partnership with Galway County Council, have reminded customers supplied by the Kilconnell Public Water Supply and the Ballyboggan Group Water Scheme, that the Boil Water Notice issued on the scheme on June 18 due to elevated levels of turbidity in the raw water remains in place.

Irish Water has instructed a hydrogeologist to carry out trials at an alternative borehole supply to determine if it is suitable to supply the scheme. If this is successful then this would be used as a temporary solution. A longer term, permanent ground water solution is also being investigated by the hydrogeologist. The boil water notice will remain in place while the short term solution is being trialed. Irish Water will continue to liaise with the HSE on the matter.

Irish Water has appealed to people to continue to conserve water following a decision to lift a Water Conservation Order covering the north and west, one of several placed on the country earlier this year in response to drought conditions.

The order covering counties Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Donegal, Longford, Cavan, and Monaghan expires tomorrow (Friday) and will not be renewed.

NUI Galway will host the 43rd Sir Peter Freyer Memorial Lecture and Surgical Symposium, the largest Surgical Conference in Ireland, from 7-8 September. Cuddy demands replacement, not repairs, for Tuam Road pipe network

Leaks and outages from water pipes on the Tuam Road have been increasing with such frequency that a local councillor has written to Irish Water calling for the pipes to be replaced.

Independent councillor for Athenry-Oranmore, Jim Cuddy, has written to Irish Water, asking for the lines be completely replaced. While significant financial outlay for pipe replacement is available, Cllr Cuddy said replacement, rather than repairs, “makes more economic sense”, as it will “improve the network significantly” and reduce operating costs in the long term.

NUI Galway scientists identify strategies to develop better beet

Plant biotechnologists from the Ryan Institute at NUI Galway have identified genetic breeding strategies to develop bigger and better sugar beet. Sustainable intensification of agriculture to meet rapidly growing global demand for food and non-food products produced by crops will require higher yielding crop varieties that can produce more food using less resources and land area. For crops such as sugar beet, this means the development of varieties that produce more per hectare, while reducing inputs. The findings from their research has been published in the international journal, BMC Plant Biology.
