Voting No on October 4 to abolishing Seanad Éireann is a way to protect scrutiny of Dáil legislation and to ensure the upper house is reformed.
This is the view of Senator Fidelma Healy-Eames, who is organising a public meeting to outline the case for retention and reform of the Seanad. The meeting will be held in the Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Square, this Monday at 8pm.

A district court judge told a persistent burglar, with 95 previous convictions, to get a job and live in the real world, before imposing the maximum sentence of 22 months for stealing more than €2,000 in cash during a series of burglaries committed over the course of four months this year.
Judge Mary Fahy made the comment after hearing evidence in the case of Francis ‘Frankie’ McDonagh of 19 Sliabh Rua, Ballybane, who appeared at Galway District Court on Monday where he entered a plea of guilty to a charge of criminal damage, obstruction, theft, and six counts of burglary.

A local TD has branded as “the great train robbery”, the price of train tickets from the new station in Oranmore, and warned that such prices could put people off using the service.
Galway West TD Brian Walsh warned that the new commuter service from Oranmore is “in danger of quickly becoming a ghost train” unless Irish Rail immediately reviews its fares.

Towns across County Galway are to be stripped of their Community Welfare Offices which are to be reduced to just a few locations, a move that has attracted condemnation from Independent politicians.
The CWO service is expected to change on Tuesday October 1. From that date, the 40 offices in Galway County, including places like Moycullen, An Spidéal, An Cheathrú Rua, Headford, Turloughmore, Oranmore, Mervue, and Athenry will be closed and the service reduced to just four clinics - Clifden, Gort, Loughrea, and Tuam.

Work has begun on NUI Galway’s €20m Clinical Research Facility and Translational Research Facility (CRF-TRF). The contract to construct the four-storey building (gross floor area 5,345m?) has been awarded to BAM Building Ltd. The construction period is anticipated to be 16 months and will create 125 construction jobs at its peak.
The CRF-TRF aims to facilitate cutting-edge medical research side-by-side with patient care in University Hospital Galway. This sharing of medical expertise and accommodation including HSE in-patient facilities will help inform new strands of clinical research. The Clinical Research aspect of the facility is being largely funded by the Health Research Board (HRB).
