Remembering Caomhán Seoighe

A Memorial Service was held in Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, Renmore, Galway on Tuesday to mark the 40th Anniversary of the disappearance of S/S Caomhán Seoighe (Kevin Joyce), a 1 Cn Cois soldier who was serving with the 48th Infantry Battalion, UNIFIL, at the time of his disappearance. S/S Seoighe was serving with the 48th Infantry Battalion, UNIFIL in 1981 when the observation post he was manning with fellow soldier Pte Hugh Doherty outside the village of Dyar Ntar was attacked. Pte Doherty’s body was recovered at the post whilst the body of S/S Seoighe has never been found. The identity of his attackers remain unknown to this day. The ceremony was led by Officer Commanding 1 Cn Cois, Lieutenant Colonel Damien Murphy. A member of S/S Seoighe’s family laid a wreath at the Memorial Monument to fallen Irish soldiers in Dún Uí Mahoilíosa. Honours were rendered by the Guard of Honour and a member of the Defence Forces Chaplaincy Service led the prayers.

From that moment on, the country has been twisted this way and that for more announcements, briefings, warnings, tellings-off, back-pats and aren’t-ye-greats all delivered and signed to us in front of official green backdrops that will forever in our minds become the shade of Covid.
