Hogan approves €239,949 for sporting facilities at Oranmore Community Centre

Minister for the Environment, Community, and Local Government, Phil Hogan, announced yesterday that the Galway Rural Development company has been given sanction to approve funding of €239,949 for the development of sporting facilities at Oranmore Community Centre.
The funding, which is granted under the village renewal and development measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007 to 2013, is to be given to the Oranmore Park Committee for the construction of the sporting facilities.

Retired supreme court judge, former senator and lifelong activist, Judge Catherine McGuinness was appointed this week as chair of NUI Galway's Údarás na hOllscoile (governing authority).
Údarás na hOllscoile, the University's Governing Authority, is responsible for managing and controlling all of the affairs of the university. In January 2012 she was appointed to the Council of State by President Michael D Higgins. Judge McGuinness was called to the Bar in 1977 and to the Inner Bar in 1989. She was a member of Seanad Éireann from 1979-82 and was previously a member of the Council of State from 1988-90. Judge McGuinness served as a judge of the circuit court from 1994-1996; of the high court from 1996-2000; and of the supreme court from 2000-2006. From 2005-2011 she was president of the Law Reform Commission. She is currently adjunct professor of law at NUI Galway.

The Galway branch of An Taisce has welcomed the commitment of Galway Council Council, and the support shown by many county councillors, to the development of the proposed Connemara Greenway and other “worthwhile” greenway projects which will not only provide vital amenities for local communities but also boost tourism and create jobs in hospitality.
In response to news last week regarding the Connemara Greenway, An Taisce Galway Association chairman Derrick Hambleton congratulated county mayor Tom Welby and other councillors for giving this worthy project full support. He also noted that it was “a pity” that some landowners are still prepared to object to these “positive attempts for the promotion of rural tourism” but stressed the need for such landowners to always be kept part of the consent process in order to keep these routes open.

Promising swimmer David O’Sullivan from Salthill has qualified for the European Junior Championships and the US Open over the summer.
Setting a new Connacht junior and senior record at the Irish Longcourse Championships on Saturday, O’Sullivan swam a time of 56.65 in the 100m butterfly heats and 56.32 in the semi final. The Salthill swimmer ensured his European qualifying time in the 200metre butterfly event on Thursday in a time of 2.03.73 3.
