The annual Christmas Day Swim in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland project Voices for Galway is taking place again this year. “Voices for Galway” is a local charity dedicated to the provision of speech and language therapy to children with Down Syndrome in the Galway community.

This is the charity’s seventh year to hold the swim – you do not have to be a swimmer to participate, just be willing to get into the sea and get yourself wet on Christmas morning is what it iss all about.

Child abuse claims against eighteen priests in Tuam archdiocese, audit reveals

Allegations of child sexual abuse were made against 18 priests in the Tuam archdiocese from 1975 to 2011, according to the Review of Safeguarding Practice in the archdiocese, just published. Ten of these priests were deceased when the review was undertaken in June 2011.

A 50-year-old Galwayman went on trial in Castlebar this week on 271 charges of raping and assaulting or neglecting his four daughters over an 18-year-period.

The charges cover an 18-year period between 1991 and 2009. It took 90 minutes for the court registrar to put each of the alleged offences to the accused man.

Galway could benefit greatly if increased efforts were made to engage with China, according to Fine Gael Senator for Galway West Fidelma Healy Eames who this week called on Ireland to act as a launch pad for Chinese businesses in Europe.

Speaking from Brussels on Tuesday where she is the only Irish parliamentarian at the EU-China summit, Senator Healy Eames said: “We need to prioritise attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) from China into Ireland in order to attract investment here and create jobs. You only have to look at how Ireland has worked so well as a European base for international businesses to see how we could benefit Chinese companies. We have a highly educated young population and are the only English speaking country in the Eurozone. This should be our calling card and should define how we identify Ireland to the Chinese business audience.
