An information event being organised at NUI Galway next week aims to improve the lives of the one in 100 people who stammer.

“Let’s talk about Stammering” will be held on Wednesday October 26 at 7pm in lecture room AC 201 in the main corridor of the Science/Arts building.

Don’t you just love it when a plan comes to fruition. When an objective has been reached. When a difference has been made. And in particular I love it when I see the many worthy causes here in the west set out a long term plan and then go on to reach that. I walk with pride through the Croi building in Newcastle knowing that we ran or walked or shook a bucket to help it. Each time we pass the Galway Hospice we all take some pride from having donated in some small but not insignificant way to its being and its continuation. Those who sleep out for Simon and COPE each year know that their discomfort will help reduce discomfort for those who really need their services.

Every bit you do for MADRA will make the world of difference to a defenceless and unloved dog somewhere and ensure that it will bring light and happiness into the lives of some family who adopts them. When we read about the many services provided by Cancer Care West, we take pride in the knowledge that somewhere at some stage, we have helped the cause.

Minister for Justice called on to reunite Galway couple separated following man’s deportation

Sinn Féin senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has raised the plight, in the Seanad, of a Galway couple who were separated after a man was deported.

In July Brazilian born Kleber Medeiros was taken from his home by Gardai and remanded in custody. He was then deported on foot of claims made by a member of the public about the validity of his marriage to Ballinasloe native Harriet Bruce. Senator Ó Clochartaigh claims this was a wrongful deportation and is calling on Justice Minister Francis Fitzgerald to act immediately to reverse the deportation.

COPE Galway says budget was positive but failed to address housing supply issue

COPE Galway has welcomed Budget 2017 as being broadly positive and encouraging with the focus on housing and addressing homelessness, with a commitment to provide €1.2 billion for the implementation of the Housing Action Plan; an additional €105 million towards the expansion of the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) Scheme and an additional €28 million towards emergency homeless accommodation are all measures welcomed by the local charity.

Canney calls for immediate action on Leader Programme

Galway East is “losing out” because of a delay in appointing a company to deliver the Leader Programme for east and north Galway, according to local TD and Minister of State, Seán Canney.

Minister Canney has called on the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs Heather Humphreys to “immediately rectify” this situation. He said there are “many communities that have projects ready to get under way but cannot do so due to the non-availability of a mechanism to apply for funding”.

If I were an alien that had just arrived on earth from another planet and read the Talking Politics article in last week’s Galway Advertiser entitled “Repealing the Eighth and the right to autonomy over ones’ own body,” I’m sure I would be marching on the Dáil in an effort to repeal the “draconian laws” you describe in this article. However I am not and I would like to point out a number of flaws in the article.

Team Manuela to walk the Camino in 2017

The walking and running team of the Manuela Riedo Foundation will hold an information night on Tuesday October 18 at 7pm in the Galway Bay Hotel.

The trip is open to people of all fitness levels, from all walks of life that might have an interest in completing part of the Camino in May 2017. It is a nine day trip along the Portuguese costal route.

Baboró’s difference makes it great

One of my favorite Baboró memories is Paper World. Everyone got to go up on stage and we started having a paper fight with some of the actors. We tore down all the paper on the set and threw it at each other. It was a lot of fun. I don’t think you get to do that at other festivals, that’s why Baboró is so great.
