The club and county structure provide a fantastic means to relay back to HQ what is happening on the ground. Galway hotel chief says JLC abolition will save and create new jobs

The hotel industry offers huge potential for creating employment if it is allowed a sustainable cost structure, according to the chairman of the Galway branch of the Irish Hotels Federation. Paul Gill has called on local TDs to support the abolition of the Joint Labour Committee system, stating that their additional layer is incompatible with jobs growth when allied to our minimum wage, currently the third highest in Europe.

GMIT provides 84 free programme places for unemployed

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) is offering up to 20 places on degree programmes and 64 places on Higher Certificate programmes under the Government’s jobs initiative “Springboard”, launched recently by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

The places are for people who have lost their jobs or were made redundant and who, with some upskilling, could fill current or future job shortages. Successful applicants can retain their benefits and will be permitted and encouraged to finish their course should they secure employment during their studies.
