Based in Knocknacarra, Mr Costello say he is the only true local supplier in the area, his aim is to supply kerosene, gasoil and diesel to meet all budgets as most larger companies have a minimum order obligation.

Aviva workers ‘left in limbo’

The 200 strong staff at Galway’s Aviva operations face an uncertain Christmas after the company announced 950 redundancies yesterday. Aviva employs more than 2,000 people at facilities in Galway, Dublin, and Cork, as well as 26 branches around the country, but no specific details relating to each location were disclosed. The redundancy programme will commence in March 2012 and could take up to two years.

Couple appeal for return of stolen engagement ring

A couple have appealed for the return of a handbag which was stolen from their car while parked outside the church in Ardrahan last week. The bag contained, among other items, an engagement ring.

The couple were attending a wedding in Ardrahan Church on Saturday October 15 when thieves targeted two cars parked outside. Three cars were broken into between 2.30pm and 3.20pm that day. The couple’s car, a Volkswagen Golf Prius, was among those burgled, with the driver’s window smashed and the woman’s handbag stolen from the vehicle.

Rahoon baby gets lifesaving transplant

An 11-month-old girl has returned to Galway after a lifesaving liver transplant in London proved successful. Ieva Zukaskuate of Rahoon received a graft from her mother’s liver during a complex operation at King’s Cross Hospital. After complications which included two leaks in a valve and a subsequent infection, Ieva was allowed to return home this week.

UHG’s poor rating in HSE league table indicates it is ‘leaderless’ and ‘unmanageable’

The chairperson of the HSE West’s regional health forum said this week he was not “shocked” to learn that University Hospital Galway has been rated the worst performing hospital in the country again.

Cllr Padraig Conneely said this “red” rating in the HSE’s HealthStat [the HSE league table] - which means the regional hospital requires urgent attention - indicated to him that it was “leaderless, unmanageable and not meeting any of its targets”.
