The promotion of enterprise activities, maintaining and creating jobs is at the top of the agenda for the new board of Údarás na Gaeltachta which has been awarded a total of €18.6 million from the Exchequer for capital and current expenditure.
The board, chaired by Anna Ní Ghallachair, met for the first time at Údarás na Gaeltachta, Na Forbacha, on December 7 last during which members were also informed that an estimated budget of €10 million, provided by the Exchequer and from the organisation’s own income sources, will go towards the creation of jobs. It is further hoped that Údarás na Gaeltachta will be able to obtain additional capital funding as a result of its co-operation with other national development agencies such as Enterprise Ireland, IDA, BIM, and Bord Bia, to assist in the promotion of enterprise activities which will help maintain current employment levels, and stimulate further growth.

Scientists at the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) in NUI Galway have teamed up with the TCD autism research group to discover how stem cell technology can help further the understanding of autism and perhaps lead to the development of better treatments.
The results of this collaboration, including any recent breakthroughs, were outlined in a public forum entitled ‘Treating Autism, Can Stem Cells Help?’, which was held yesterday evening at 6pm at the Science Gallery at TCD.

Christmas can be an expensive time of year for everyone, especially for those of us who are studying and aren’t earning a regular income. When I was younger, I was able to get away with presenting my family their gifts without actually having to put my hand in my pocket. I relied on my sibling to buy the presents and include me as part of he ‘present ceremony’. Now that I’m older, I realise that I too have to give back in order to have a sense of giving and being independent. I’ve saved up my pocket money all year and set a challenge for myself this Christmas to shop on a budget.

Katelyn Molloy, a Leaving Cert student from Cregmore, Claregalway has qualified for the semi-final stages of the All-Ireland Music Competition where a recording contract and representation at TMI awaits the winning act. Seventeen year-old Katelyn, a cousin of pop star Una Healy of The Saturdays will be contesting for a place in the final at the West County Hotel, Ennis, Co Clare on January 4 where she will have to battle against 15 other competitors in the penultimate stages of the competition.
The final will be held on January 5 and those who make the final round of the contest will be decided by a judging panel of Mercury Music winner Gemma Hayes and former Eurovision winner Paul Harrington. Ms Molloy has strong links with the world of musical and stage performance as well as making television appearances. She was a finalist in the Connaught stage of Teen Idol at 14 and qualified for the final the following year. She was also a prominent feature in the ‘Our School’s Got Talent’ competition, reaching the final twice. She performed in the Renmore Pantomine circuit and has been a member of the Performing Arts School in Galway for the past five years and at only five, she appeared on the hit Irish TV show, ‘It’s a Family Affair’.
