Health Minister told to ‘back off’ and leave newly qualified nurses alone

Minister for Health James Reilly has been told to “back off”and find a more “equitable” solution rather than reducing the starting salary for newly qualified nurses and midwives to 80 per cent of the current rate.

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor O’Clochartaigh wants the Minister to end the controversial recruitment initiative of graduate nurses and instead implement an “equal work, equal pay” approach.

Gaelscoil Dara, Renmore, entered a Facebook competition run by the English company Wicksteed Playscapes, to win playground equipment to the value of £25,000. After diligent efforts were made by parents of the students to share the link and encourage their online friends to vote for Gaelscoil Dara, 1,737 votes were secured which allows the school to progress to the next stage of the contest for which 10 schools have been shortlisted. A panel of adjudicators will visit the schools later in the month to determine which is the one most deserving of the prize. Parents, teachers, and the student body will team up to prove their determination to win. The children must exhibit their passion through artistic media, why they believe their school should be selected to win.

Researchers at NUI Galway have begun designing high quality forestry products through the use of innovative engineering technologies. The research project will be spearheaded by Dr Annette Harte, a senior lecturer of civil engineering and member of the Ryan Institute at NUI Galway. The first stage of this new initiative, with an estimated cost of €500,000, is to create a database that will list details of all recognised properties of Irish produced timber. The next step will be to re-engineer the timber in order to create products with enhanced strength and durability.

The nominations are Best Production; Best Actress for Eileen Walsh as Betty in A Whistle in the Dark; Best Actor for Garrett Lombard as Tom in Conversations on a Homecoming and Marty Rea as Michael in A Whistle in the Dark; Best Supporting Actress for Marie Mullen as Missus in Conversations on a Homecoming; and Best Supporting Actor for Aaron Monaghan as Liam in Conversations on a Homecoming and Gavin Drea as Des in A Whistle in the Dark.
