One of the top prizes at last weekend’s IPB All-Island Pride of Place Awards went to Shantalla Residents Association who were given particular recognition for their trojan work on the Gathering Project, bringing people from home and abroad together for the re-enactment of the Monster Rallies addressed by Daniel O’Connell.
At the annual award ceremony, which took place last Saturday at The Venue, Derry, the Shantalla Residents Association received the top award in category three of the Cities Competition, which is a single issue category for Tourism Diaspora Initiative. It wasn’t the only Galway group to receive recognition as the Ballybane Community Sports and Men’s Shed Project received the runner-up prize in category one of the Cities Competition for communities with a population of less than 1,000 people, and Oranmore was also named as a Livecom nominee.

One of Ireland’s leading cartoonists Tom Mathews will launch the Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop 2014 calendar, in the bookshop tomorrow at 6pm.
The calendar will feature photos of the bookshop over the years in its various locations. The shop originally began as a market stall in Munster Avenue in 1989, before moving to Dominick Street, and later to Middle Street, before moving to its current location in the Cornstore Mall. The calendar also celebrates the bookshop’s upcoming 25th anniversary.

There was more than €3 million worth of cannabis seized in rural districts between January 1 and October 31 this year by Galway gardai who will undergo even further extensive training and upskilling in order to crack down on drug related crime.
Addressing the members of the Galway County Joint Policing Committee on Monday, Chief Superintendent Tom Curley said that drug related crime is an area which is “going to received major attention” and that many gardai officers in the district have already benefited from further training. He made the comment after presenting the contents of the Garda Report which showed that between January 1 and October 31 this year cannabis seizures totaling €3,202,050 had been made, with the majority of cases involving grow houses. The next biggest seizures were in cocaine which came to a total of €21,160, followed by heroin at €13,450, and ecstasy at €3,850.
