Thousands expected as Solemn Novena starts next week

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the city next week for the annual Solemn Novena which will run from Feb 10 to Feb 18.

Since 1982 large crowds have been attending this event in the Galway Cathedral. The Director of the Novena, Redemptorist Father Brendan O’Rourke commented that for him the highlight of each session is listening to the voice of God’s people expressed in the petitions and thanksgivings which are read at each of the 54 sessions which will be held on weekdays at 7.45, 11.00, 1.10pm, 3.30pm, 7.30pm, 9.30pm and on Sundays: 9.00am, 10.30am, 12.30pm, 4.30pm, 6.30pm, 8.15pm.

Nolan must clarify Labour’s stance on religious education says Cheevers

Labour’s proposal to ditch religious education is more about ideology than a properly thought through policy to promote and improve science and mathematics education.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway City East candidate Alan Cheevers, who is calling on Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan to clarify his position on religious education in primary schools in Galway City. His call follows Education Minister Ruairí Quinn’s demand that the hours spent teaching religion in schools be cut, and that greater emphasis and time needs to be spent on maths and science.

The Learning Institute, Galway, has been successful in securing funding from the Irish Computer Society, and as a result the institute is now offering a range of computer courses for beginners for just €20.

Participants will be taught how to make use of the internet, send email, use internet telephone services like Skype, and do shopping and banking online during four two-hour classes through the Get Ireland Online programme. Everybody will benefit from this training, but it is especially suitable for unemployed people, disadvantaged groups, and anyone lacking in basic IT skills.
