While it will not surprise Galway readers that an Independent-Left candidate made the final cut in Donegal - due to the county’s continual ‘No’ line on almost everything governmental - the election results in Galway West told a similar story. In fact, while the establishment parties are working to claim a majority, the detail in the transfers tells a different, and quite revealing, story.

Free Family Fun Day at Castlegar GAA Club this Saturday

Castlegar GAA Club is holding its annual Open Day, for the registration of new and existing members, this Saturday, March 5, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. A free fun-filled afternoon is planned at the clubhouse with face-painting, balloon artists and lots of games and activities for all your family to enjoy.

New members and existing members alike are encouraged to come along this Saturday for an entertaining and exciting day at the clubhouse. Byrne outlines urgent need for channel at Cahermore to be extended

Flooding was on the agenda again at Monday’s meeting of Galway County Council, with Kinvara Councillor Joe Byrne calling for the immediate progressing of the channel in Cahermore. A channel was constructed in the townland between Ardrahan and Kinvara in January during the height of the flooding, but it has been agreed by all that to alleviate South Galway’s flooding issues in the long-term, it needs to be deepened and lengthened.

Galway County Council is currently submitting an application for planning permission to get this work completed. Director of services Liam Gavin said the local authority was currently in discussions with the OPW as to how they could progress the work and the picture is, as yet, unclear.

NUI Galway announce appointment of first ever VP for Equality and Diversity in an Irish university

NUI Galway today announced the appointment of Professor Anne Scott as Vice President for Equality and Diversity. This is the first appointment of its kind in an Irish University.

Professor Scott is currently Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Community in Liverpool John Moores University. She has worked as an academic and academic leader in the Scottish, Irish and currently the English Higher Education Systems. She held the post of Head of the School of Nursing and Human Sciences, Dublin City University (2000-2006) where she led the development of BSc, MSc and PhD programmes in the school, in addition to founding and developing a vibrant culture of research and scholarship.

GRETB free pharmacy sales assistant programme

The GRETB Training Centre has announced another free full-time day training course in Mervue. The retail pharmacy skills programme will commence on March 14. The programme is open to all unemployed adults and preference given to those in receipt of social protection payments.

Launch of Oranmore Maree coastal search unit

A public meeting will be held in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel next Monday March 7 where details of a newly established coastal search unit will be unveiled.

This organisation was established following the recent extensive coastal search which took place over the Christmas period after young NUIG student Michael Bugler was reported missing. During that time, Oranmore became the central location, where members of An Garda Siochana, Galway Lifeboat, and Galway Civil Defence were joined each day by several hundred volunteers.

The local faces seemed to be the same local faces. Those same local faces were loyal to the same national faces. The local constituencies merely a foreplay to the grand coupling in the smoke-filled rooms.

And so on it went. Ad infinitum.

As sure as the sun rises in the morning, Eamon Ó Cuív will be re-elected. However the Dáil he faces will enjoy no such certainty, as an angry electorate rejects the Government, and no single party holds enough seats to lead a majority, Government. For Dep Ó Cuív though, this could be the makings of a much stronger, more effective parliament.
