Local Garda numbers will “reach dangerously low levels” over the next two years unless the Minister for Justice “immediately” lifts the ban on Garda recruitment.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil city councillor Peter Keane, who was speaking following Minister Alan Shatter’s confirmation this week that a further 1,200 gardaí will be eligible to retire over the next two years – 25 per cent more than was originally expected.

REHEARSALS ARE in full swing for the Renmore Pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, written by Peter Kennedy and directed by Brian and Seán Power.
Snow White will run at the Town Hall Theatre, for 20 performances from December 29 to January 13. Shows are timed on different days at 12 noon, 2.30pm, 4.30pm and 7.30pm.

A commanding portrait of Al Capone smiled proudly upon the wall of Capones last Wednesday as the restaurant celebrated its second birthday serving hearty Italian cuisine to the hungry palates of Galway. In a charismatic atmosphere where conversation flowed as smoothly as the wine poured and jazz band played, many faces from around the community joined the festivities.
To kick off a day of celebrations, dozens of supporters were greeted with free scones at the Alzheimers Society coffee morning where generous donations were collected for the Galway branch. Later, children were entertained by Paddy the Magician while enjoying pizzas specially priced as low as €1.

Mr de Buitléar’s archive, presented to the university yesterday, consists of his documentary films; material relating to the history of broadcasting and film production in Ireland; music recordings of Seán Ó Riada, Ceoltóirí Chualann, and Ceoltóirí Laighean; visual and audio records of environmental studies; material from the de Buitléar family papers.

The grant allocation was €84,500 and were distributed as follows: Celtic Seris Tour de Connemara (€9,000); Clifden Arts Festival (€8,000); Galway Comedy Festival (€7,500); Galway Food Festival (€13,000); Cúirt International Festival of Literature (€7,500); Galway Masters Basketball Association (€5,000); Umbro Galway Cup (€13,000); Ballinasloe Horse Fair (€5,000); Baboró International Arts Festival for Children (€7,500); Galway International Rally (€4,000); Áras Eanna Arts Centre, Inis Óirr (€5,000).
