Over the past few weeks, the impact of the proposed routes on the Galway City Transport Project has been articulated in great detail at a series of forums across the city and county. We have heard about houses and farms being destroyed, about businesses being decimated, about schools being overlooked. We have seen politicians try to justify both the development and the withdrawal of its plans. However, the opposition grew in stature last night when one of the city’s biggest employers, and one of the reasons for the city’s vitality and attraction, spoke out strongly about how it feels the roads will impact on their plans.

A deputation from Galway is to travel to Europe to discuss proposals for a new city bypass and the option of returning to the original route which failed at planning stage. It was decided at a special meeting of the Galway County Council on Monday evening that city and county councillors, local TDs, and community representatives will meet MEPs and members of the European Commission to discuss various options.

Greenway group seeks progress on Western Rail Corridor greenway proposal

A campaign group set up to seek to use part of the Western Rail Corridor as a greenway until such time as it can be developed to provide a rail service has this week welcomed comments from Iarnród Éireann indicating the company would be open to the project.

The group, the Western Rail Trail Campaign, was reacting to comments this week by IE director of infrastructure Don Cunningham at the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications. Mr Cunningham said IE would be open to nonoperational railway lines being developed for alternative uses, provided there was an understanding that they could revert to operational use in the future.

‘Nobody wants to lose the races’, meeting hears

Since the six new proposed bypass routes were revealed, widespread fears have been expressed from all corners about the future of the Galway Races. The blue route allows for a tunnel to be built under the Ballybrit track, and manager John Maloney has expressed his belief that this development would lead to the racetrack closing for a period of two years.

At last Monday’s meeting a number of councillors spoke at length about the value of the Galway Races to the local economy. Fianna Fáil’s Gerry Finnerty said the one thing everybody associates with Galway is the races and the impact on the racecourse had to be a factor in the decision making process.
