Racing this bank holiday weekend at Ballybrit

The two day October Bank Holiday meeting kicks off on Sunday, October 25 with the first race at 1.30pm, and Bank Holiday Monday October 26 at 1.25pm.  There are 14 races, generously sponsored by many local firms over two great days of competitive National Hunt racing, with an impressive total prize fund of over €215,000 on offer which is sure to attract runners from many of Ireland’s top stables. The feature race on Sunday is “The Faber Audiovisuals Handicap Hurdle” and on Monday “The Ennis Lifts Handicap Steeplechase”.

Racegoers on Sunday can also take the opportunity to watch Argentina vs Australia in the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup live on the Big Screen.

Nolan welcomes news that GMIT can proceed to next stage of designation of university status

Local TD Derek Nolan has welcomed the news that Galway Mayo Institute of Technology can now proceed to Stage 2 of the Technological University (TU) designation process.

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), along with the Institute of Technology, Sligo (IT Sligo) and Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) have put forward proposals for a merger to form the Connacht-Ulster Alliance (CUA), and they submitted a Stage 1 Expression of Interest to the Higher Education Authority (HEA) for Technological University (TU) designation earlier this year. Minister Jan O’Sullivan’s decision on Tuesday has been informed by the advice of the HEA board who considered the CUA expression of interest on October 6, 2015.

Ever wondered how research at NUI Galway and St. Angela’s College in Sligo impacts upon our daily lives, those of our family and our broader community? To learn more about it the public are invited to a competition which might just answer that question on Thursday, 29 October at 6pm in An Taibhdhearc Theatre, Galway.

The THREESIS competition is an academic challenge that will see students and staff from NUI Galway and St. Angela’s College in Sligo present their research to the audience and a panel of judges in an accessible language that a non-expert can understand. Presenter of Newstalk’s Futureproof and award winning broadcaster, Jonathan McCrea will act as MC.

GMIT open days to feature new interactive learning and development activities

Secondary school pupils, teachers, and career counsellors will find a new format at GMIT’s upcoming open days on Friday October 23 (9.30am to 12.30pm) and Saturday October 24, with a new focus on learning and development games and activities.

This year, the schools liaison office has added new interactive events to the programme schedule, including a learning games zone, smart careers networking challenges, a SUSI grant clinic, and CAO options talks. In the games zone, students and their teachers can take part in a range of challenges in STEM, business, and arts such as a laser grid, a smart car,  design a postcard, mind storms, culinary challenges, real or Photoshop, and DIY yourself, among others.

ADHD is a behavioural disorder associated with cognitive impairments and brain alterations, both structural and functional. Increased rates of co-morbid psychiatric symptoms and secondary impairments such as work or relationship difficulties are commonly reported in ADHD. Cognitive deficits in executive functioning, including attention, working memory, and inhibition have been widely noted, as have difficulties in arousal, motivation, and emotional regulation (self-regulation impairments).

Mindfulness meditation is a self-regulatory practice that is multifaceted but will improve self-regulation of attention and emotion.  The practice involves decreasing arousal and training attention to the present experience with openness, curiosity, and acceptance. Awareness is seeing reality with open eyes, unimpeded by judgments and unrestrained by fears.
