It is certainly a great achievement for any television show to be still on air after a 10 year run, and that is the milestone being marked by Seo Spoirt on TG4 this season. Galway based presenter Gemma Ní Chionnaith has been at the helm of the weekly sports programme since its inception, and along with co-presenter, Kerry footballing legend Dara Ó Cinnéide, is thrilled to have returned to our screens for the live Friday night show.

ROPES, THE annual literary journal produced by NUI Galway’s MA in literature and publishing students, returns this year exploring themes of gaining, losing, rejecting and sustaining independence.
The ROPES team is seeking poetry, prose and artwork submissions on the theme. They are also seeking financial support to help cover the production costs. The students are seeking to raise €1,500 through Fund It. Donations over €15 are eligible for prizes, including crowdfunder exclusive bookmarks and a personalized thank-you in the journal itself. Donations will help showcase up-and-coming literary and artistic talent from around the globe and also support the Galway Simon Community, as all of the proceeds from ROPES will benefit this charity.

Claregalway/Carnmore drama group, Compántas Lir, returns to Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe next week with their latest production, Proof by David Auburn.

Galway-based coffee chain Mocha Beans have become the first coffee shop chain in the Republic of Ireland to be accredited with the Friendly WiFi symbol and will soon be displaying the ‘Friendly WiFi’ symbol across their stores. This means that their public WiFi service has been checked and verified to meet a minimum level of content filtering making their service safe for children and young people when browsing the internet.

96% of properties available to rent in Galway City are priced beyond the reach of people depending on state rent supports for their housing, a snapshot study by the Simon Communities in Ireland has found.
There was just one property available to rent in Galway City for a couple or parent with one child within Rent Supplement/Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) limits over the three day study period.

Organised by three science outreach initiatives based in NUI Galway, Cell EXPLORERS, Eco EXPLORERS and Kitchen Chemistry, the workshop will include a full day of science-related activities such as preparing DNA, observing colourful chemical reactions and working with live exotic animals.

A national organisation, set up by a Galway couple which provides support services for bereaved parents and families, will hold a bereavement information evening in the city next week.
Anam Cara was co-founded in 2008 by Galway parents Sharon Vard who lived in Oughterard and attended the Mercy school in Newtownsmith, and her husband Aiden Murphy from Dangan. They live in Dublin and set up the organisation following the death of their daughter Rachel from an inoperable brain tumour in November 2004.

Irish people are being advised to take appropriate precautions if visiting Central and South America and the Caribbean. The advice comes in the wake of the World Health Organisation’s declaration of the zika virus as a public health emergency of international concern.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade currently has travel advisories in place for 32 countries and territories in response to the ongoing outbreak.
