A local charity is appealing to landlords to make their properties available to rent to individuals and families at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Jacquie Horan, the CEO of COPE Galway, which is committed to eliminating the problem, says supply and access to housing is the single biggest issue experienced by its clients.

Galway city councillors have voted to preserve the facades of a number of early 20th century art deco facades on William Street West. The facades, located beside the junction with Munster Avenue, were added to the city's Record of Protected Structures this week, despite several councillors expressing their dislike of the architectural style of the buildings.
The RPS lists buildings which are considered to be of architectural, historical, archaeological, artistic, cultural, scientific, social or technical merit, and those structures included on the list are afforded protection under planning legislation.

The Golden Quill and Golden Dozen award winners for 2016 were announced by the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors at a conference in Melbourne on Sunday.

The Union of Students in Ireland is reminding students who have not submitted their student grant funding applications for the 2016/2017 academic year to do so immediately, as the deadline for applications is tomorrow, July 8.
SUSI, the national student grant awarding body, opened its online application system on April 5 and has received 70,000 applications to date for the 2016/2017 academic year. USI said students who need this vital funding should apply well ahead of the deadline to ensure their applications receive priority.

Don your walking boots and take part in a walking marathon or half marathon in scenic Connemara next month.
The Galway Walking Club is hosting the event on August 6 taking place in some of the most scenic places in Connemara. The route is from Killary to Ma'am Valley, mostly along the Western Way. It is mainly a flat walk, the highest point being Maumean at 259 metres. About one third of the walk is on the road, but the route is chiefly on green road or forest track.

A local volunteer centre has reported a 25 per cent increase in the number of people contacting its service for the first time last year seeking volunteering work. More than half of these had never volunteered before.
According to the Volunteer Galway's annual report for 2015, which is just published, it estimates that since it was set up 10 years ago, the equivalent of €7 million worth of volunteer hours have been generated by people using its service in the city and county.
