I am a reader. I usually have two or three books on the go at the same time. A good thriller is one of my basic pleasures, and I tend to read it slowly, picking it up and putting it down after a few chapters. I like the sense of anticipation of what is coming next as I insert a book marker or fold over the corner of a page when I have reached a particularly exciting moment.

COPE Galway, in conjunction with Yann Studios, will be providing a free Valentine's photo booth on Shop Street between 11am and 5pm this Saturday. Within the romance themed white marquee, which will be located beside Brown Thomas, people can avail of professional photo sessions throughout the day in return for a donation to COPE Galway.

While it is Valentine's weekend, the photos will not be limited to capturing romantic moments — couples, families, friends, pets, and whoever else you want to bring along can pose for a professional picture in the red and white interior.

Drug slang glossary outlined as three-month criminal organisation trial continues

The trial of two Galway men accused of directing a criminal organisation yesterday heard a glossary of slang allegedly used by the men on surveillance tapes.

Michael O’Loughlin (31) of Rahylin Glebe, Ballybane and Eddie O’Loughlin (28) of Rockfield Park, Rahoon, have both pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to directing the activities of a criminal organisation in the Galway area between February 10 and June 1, 2010.

Walsh to oppose HSE cuts to Galway Hospice

A plan by the HSE to impose a three per cent cut to funding for the Galway Hospice Foundation for this year has been condemned by Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh.

Dep Walsh has described as “grossly unfair” plans to reduce funding for the organisation and said he would “fight tooth and nail” against it.

St Francis Home could be used as step-down facility if proposal gets green light

Empty beds at St Francis Community Nursing Home in Newcastle could be used as a step-down facility to relieve the pressure on University Hospital Galway if a proposal being put forward by an HSE manager gets the go-ahead.

Councillor Catherine Connolly, the leader of an action group set up last year to save the public nursing home from closure, says following a meeting with the HSE West’s new community care manager it was confirmed that the 14 empty beds could be used immediately.
