Brendan Smith was honoured as winner of the Cairdeas Award at the inaugural American Chamber of Commerce West Northwest US Ireland Business Conference held at NUI Galway last week. The system used to determine the patronage of new schools needs to be reviewed to ensure education through the Irish langauge is available to all, according to Aire don Ghaeilge, don Ghaeltacht agus do na hÓilean, Seán Kyne.
The Minister, and Fine Gael Galway West TD, was speaking at the official opening of the new school for Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in Knocknacarra, Galway city, which is one of the largest gaelscoileanna in the State.

Eleven people are waiting for up to a year for physiotherapy services in Connemara, Inisbofin, and the Aran Islands. In all, there are 214 people awaiting these services in that region.
A total of 121 are waiting for up to 12 weeks, 59 are waiting for up to 26 weeks, while 23 are waiting up to 39 weeks, a meeting of the HSE’s Health Forum West was told this week.

Over the past eight years, Claregalway Castle has become the premier centre for botanical art and illustration in the west of Ireland, thanks to the annual Botanical Art Expo held in conjunction with the Galway Garden Festival every July.
Galway City Arts Officer James Harrold will open the Botanical Art Expo at the Castle on Monday July 1 at 7pm. He will also launch the Castle’s new, mostly bilingual publication The Claregalway Castle Project, which celebrates the history and restoration of the Castle and the annual events that are held there.
